Tom: (…) Now to Australia, where the country’s most prestigious arts event, the Sydney Festival, is entering its final week. The festival attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to see music, theatre and dance from all over the world. But this year, about a third of the acts who were due to perform have pulled out – and it’s nothing to do with COVID.

Axmed: No, it’s all because of the decision by the festival last year to accept sponsorship from the State of Israel, who are listed on the festival’s website as ’star partner’. The festival faced objections from Palestinian solidarity groups, who said that this is not appropriate given Israel’s ongoing occupation and human rights violations. But the festival dug its heels in, and many artists have now withdrawn in protest.

ARD-faktenfinder: Was sind die Ziele von BDS?

Doris Ghannam: BDS fordert von Israel, das Völkerrecht zu respektieren und dass es die Besetzung und Kolonisation allen arabischen Landes beendet und die Mauer abreißt; das Grundrecht der arabisch-palästinensischen Bürger Israels auf völlige Gleichheit anerkennt; und die Rechte der palästinensischen Flüchtlinge, in ihre Heimat und zu ihrem Eigentum zurückzukehren, wie es in der UN Resolution 194 vereinbart wurde, respektiert, schützt und fördert. Dies sind drei Grundrechte, ohne die das palästinensische Volk sein unveräußerliches Recht auf Selbstbestimmung nicht ausüben kann…
